Can Eraquell be mixed into feed?

  • VioVet Staff

The datasheet for this medication does not advise it be mixed into the feed. It should be dosed as folows:
The animal’s mouth must be free of food. The syringe should be placed between the front and back teeth and the paste deposited at the base of the tongue. Immediately elevate the head for a few seconds to ensure that the product is swallowed.
This is mainly to ensure the full dose has been given safely and is not left in the feed bucket.

Donkey wormers

Sam M

Eraquell is apparently recommended by the donkey sanctuary yet your product description infers it is licensed for only horses. If it is, can you suggest an alternative. My donkey has a high count and had panacur 5 in the early spring. Thank you

  • VioVet Staff

Hi Sam,

Eraquell should be suitable for a donkey but if you send an email to our vet ([email protected]) she will confirm this.

Best wishes,

VioVet.

Worms

Jade

Does it get rid of pinworm?

  • VioVet Staff

That is a good question. This wormer is licensed as a suitable treatment for Pinworm (Oxyuris equi) but in fact it is not very effective by itself. Effective pinworm treatment is more complicated than that. Medicated washes and enemas are sometimes used as well as an oral wormer, due to the location and life cycle of the worm. It is advisable to avoid sharing grooming equipment too. It is best to talk to your vet about this, or perhaps read about it online. There is a lot more to it than just using the wormer.

Time till worming next

Laura Gale

How long until the next worming if you use eraquell as it states you can't worm again until after thirty days but not what the normal period would be for it to last? As most are twelve weeks.
Yours thankfully
Laura Gale

As a general guide, wormers are usually given to horses every 3 months. However it is best to tailor a worming programme to an individual horse if possible, taking into account where it is kept and how many horses share the grazing etc. Most worm doses actually only last a day or two in a way. They kill most or all worms present in the horse at the time the dose is given. The worming drug is then lost from the body and the horse will gradually start to pick up worms again, even within a few days. A small number of worms do no harm and are entirely natural for horses to have. If these build up to a high level, there is a much greater chance of them causing trouble. Hence it is usual to worm periodically to prevent this. However it is not quite true to think of the wormer lasting for the entire interval between worm doses, just that there is no need to keep worming more often than that.

If possible you should send a dung sample to a lab and test for worm eggs. Some horses do not need worming because they are on pasture which is not heavily contaminated with worm eggs and/or they can develop a good immunity to worms themselves. Others can rapidly build up a worm burden and need regular, effective worming. See the guides available on this page.

Is Equarell effective against red worm

Gayle Tyler

Can you tell me if equarell is effective against ed worm as it doesn't specifically mention red worm. Thank you

  • VioVet Staff

Eraquell is effective against adult and
immature redworm but not the encysted larvae which may be hibernating in
the gut wall. The product will kill emerging redworm larvae though.
Redworm are referred to as 'Cyathostomum spp.' in data sheets.
If you are concerned about encysted redworm larvae, I would recommend using a product containing moxidectin, like Equest or Equest Pramox (Pramox also contains praziquantel to kill tapeworm and is ideal for
use in spring or autumn). Alternatively, a five day course of Panacur Equine should also be effective against larvae in the gut wall.
